Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, the Core Technologies behind Metaverse!

Our perception of the surrounding environment is based upon the interaction between our natural senses and the surrounding environment. As you know, we sense any environment (target environment) through our natural senses i.e sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Based on the inputs from these senses, we create a perception of that environment in our mind and respond to it as per our cognition. In this article, we will learn about Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality from the perspective of the interaction between our natural senses and technology, leading to different perceptions of the target environment.

Augmented Awareness and Immersive Experience

When the target environment is the real world and our natural senses interact with the elements of both the real world and the technology world, then our awareness of the elements of the target environment is augmented beyond the intelligence that could have been gathered by our natural senses alone. In another case, in contrast to this when the target environment is a virtual environment, created through the use of technology, and our natural senses interact with the elements of this virtual world only, then the experiences through actions and reactions are highly immersive.

Augmented Reality (AR)

Augmented Reality is the amplification of the present perception of reality (physical environment). Augmented Reality facilitates a mixed reality environment, wherein, the person is able to see reality (through natural senses) along with computer-generated visualizations enabling a better perception of reality (allowing the person to go beyond the perceived reality through natural senses ).

The person is actually present in the target (physical/real world) environment and able to perceive the real environment through the person’s natural senses and cognition. However, his/her awareness and perception of actual-world/reality is enhanced/augmented/enriched through the information provided/projected by the respective IoT/AR devices being used eg. Vuzix Blade AR Smart Glass. Augmented Reality(AR) adds digital elements to the actual reality.

Virtual Reality (VR)

The user is not present in the target environment physically; rather he/she is immersed in the virtual environment (target environment) to have an experience of the virtual world from his/her natural senses and cognition. The virtual environment is a result of projections of graphics (graphical models like 3D CAD files/animations etc. or Metaverse) of reality.

In other words, the person is physically present in the real world, however, his/her natural senses are sensing the elements of the target/virtual environment. His/her actions in the real world translate into corresponding responses in the target environment. Eg. forward/backward movement in the real world corresponds to a similar movement in the virtual environment OR head movement in any direction causes a similar change in view in the virtual environment OR a verbal command to zoom in the real environment translates to a closer view of the desired section in the virtual environment etc…

At this point, we must understand one thing… the translation of any action in the physical environment to a corresponding response in the virtual environment is pre-designed, pre-defined, and pre-configured in the VR system/technology platform through various sensors and technology to enable audio-visual devices.

Virtual Reality creates and enhances imaginary reality. High processing capacity is required to provide a quality experience (delay in responses may cause a bad experience)

The capabilities of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are greatly complemented by other technological advancements like the Internet of things or Industrial Internet of things, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, etc.

Metaverse

Metaverse can be a very good example of the Integration (through interoperability) of all the above-indicated technologies. This platform seems to be a replica of the real world with all possible interactions and transactions happening in the virtual environment of Metaverse like Personal (Home, Avatars, Entertainment,…), Professional (WFH, Team collaborations, Shops, Offices, Payments…), and Social (Networking, Safety & Security….).

Different companies and individuals through their skills and innovations can develop extensions (interoperable applications, elements, etc. with protective rights) in Personal, Professional, and Social spaces leading to a seamless experience for the metaverse users teleporting between these extended applications…
